Holiday Style Guide

If you’re like me you tend to overthink your holiday attire. I have a whole slew of family parties and other events to attend during the holidays and I like to mix it up for each one, especially when it comes to my wardrobe. This year consider following a few of these guidelines when you’re preparing for the evening.

The Scarlet Letter

1 2

When you think of Christmas I am willing to bet that red is one of the first colors that comes to mind, I mean, it’s literally everywhere. I’m a big fan of sporting this color during the holidays; it’s an insanely flattering and fierce color. I wear it everywhere from my lips, to nails, to dresses, to soles. A true red lip looks amazing on every skin tone, and bright red nails are just classic. If you’re looking to wear the color to a Christmas party, consider a LLD (little lace dress). Lace and red go together like peanut butter and jelly, you will look beautiful, elegant, and trendy in this little number.

Laces (NOT)

3 4

Which brings me to my next topic; lace! Lace is one of the most elegant fabrics that exist in the world and nothing looks more beautiful around this time of year. For a little edge to your holiday look, try wearing a sheer lace top tucked into a high waisted skirt. Then again there is the obvious choice of wearing a lace dress (which we mentioned above), or even lace tights under a LBD. No matter where or how you wear it, you’re sure to WOW!

The Velveteen Rabbit

5 6

I’m going to start by saying right off the bat, this is a look that is not for everyone. Personally I’m not even sure could pull it off, but from what I’ve seen on the runways and celebs, it’s a look at least worth trying. Velvet is rich and the colors are always bold and beautiful, it’s a great texture to play around with and mix with other fabrics. I’ve seen everything from Velvet tuxedo dresses to velvet leggings and they all look stunning. Try wearing velvet leggings, or even high waisted velvet trousers, with an oversized silk button down.

Go Faux It

7 8

I have a cropped faux fur jacket that always sits in my closet until the holidays roll around, I feel like it’s the one time of year I can really get away with wearing it. They’re warm and insanely chic so if you have one sitting in storage like I did, it’s time to bring it out and dust it off. A cropped jacket looks great over a cocktail dress, but if you have a longer one that sits on or below the hips try pairing it with leather leggings, a slouchy top, and sky high heels.

Glitz and Glamour

9 10

Sequins used to be reserved for the more flashy holiday, New Year’s Eve. However, we’ve been seeing a ton of sequins just about everywhere lately from the office to weddings, which leads us to believe it’s perfectly acceptable to rock a sequin mini dress or sparkly leggings to your Christmas dinner. I spotted a TO DIE FOR sequin maxi dress on Pinterest paired with a distressed band t-shirt and almost died. The mix of amazingly glamourous and totally relaxed was a look I only dream of wearing but it looked like pure perfection. If you want to test out the trend as well you can try the same approach. Pair sequin skinnies with an oversized sweater or long t-shirt to give them a more casual appearance. If you’re all about the sparkle and shine, don yourself in a sparkly mini dress and let your look do all the talking!

Get it in Print

11 12

Sometimes all we need to dress up a typically casual outfit is a bold print. I’ve recently snagged some leggings that combine a boat load of above trends; they’re black leggings adorned with gold velvet and they’re oh-so-shiny! The velvet print is gold jacquard again black which looks pretty gorgeous, if I do say so myself. I plan on wearing these either with an oversized sweater to dress them down, or a black lace peplum top to dress them up, depending on the party I choose to wear them to. So play with prints this year, jacquard in rich textures, oversized florals in deep hues, or windowpane prints in striking colors. Anything goes this year guys, anything!

The Not So Ugly Christmas Sweater

14 holiday style

Sweaters serve many purposes here; they’re warm and functional, but stylish and chic. Grab a sweater with bold embellishments, like a built in necklace or cluster of sequins and pearls and pair it with…well…just about anything. These laid back but pretty sweatshirts were made to be paired with flared midi skirts, high waisted jeans, or cropped trousers. They’re the perfect item to to wear if you want to dress something up or down.
