I tend to get stuck in the same fashion rut for a long time, I find what’s comfortable for me and I don’t stray too far. My fashion resolution for the new year is to step even more out of my comfort zone and branch out into new and unexplored territories. These are my specific resolutions for the things I want to change next year, maybe some of these will help you too!
1. Shopping by myself.
Shopping with your girlfriends or significant other can be a blast, but most times it’s just distracting. When you’re in a store that someone else doesn’t love or isn’t into, I find myself rushing through the store and not really looking through everything just to make the process faster and less painful for them. Often times I miss a lot of the good pieces that are hidden away because I don’t feel like I have the time to dig through everything. When I shop by myself I always leave feeling like it was a successful trip. Also, there’s always that factor of your friends giving their opinion, and sometimes it’s not what you want to hear. If you try something on and you love it, you could get the “ehhhh” reaction from your shopping partner and it will totally kill your mojo. If you’re just running out with your friends for a quick trip, have fun! However, if you are really on the hunt for something special, go by yourself. You’ll end up with something you really love and get your money’s worth.
2. Invest
I have a tendency to spend like $17-$40 on clothes… I don’t like spending a lot of money on things like that because I honestly don’t know how long they’re going to last in my house. I have two kids, two dogs, and a cat… things are easily destroyed here. That being said, I always end up kicking myself because the things I’m not spending money on seem to destroy themselves down the line anyway. For 2015 I want to start being smarter with my purchases and investing a little money in some key pieces. I have two pairs of ‘designer’ jeans that fit like a glove and go on heavy rotation throughout my wardrobe, and when I think about those two pairs of jeans I can’t understand why I wouldn’t want my entire wardrobe to feel that way. They’re comfortable, durable, and fit like they were custom made for me. Spend a little more money on things that you know you’re going to get a lot of wear out of, it may seem like a splurge at the time, but when you’re still wearing the same pieces 3 years later that are classics and trendy at the same time, you’ll be glad you spent the money.
3. Play with prints
I’m very self conscious about my legs, I feel like I have huge thighs… and now that I pointed that out I’m sure everyone else will notice it too (haha!). I have a tendency to wear solid bottoms and never really dabble in prints because I feel like they only accentuate my thunder thighs. For the new year I am throwing caution to the wind and experimenting with the trend more often. I’ve discovered it’s all about the fit; not all prints were created equal, so not every print will make my legs appear larger. Smaller prints are definitely more forgiving, so I’m going to start there.
4. Play with shapes… for my sunglasses
I have this weird theory that only aviators look good on my face. I have an absurd collection of sunglasses and I’d say about 90% of them are aviators. Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong, but either way I’m going to push myself to wear other shaped shades more often. That being said, I know the cat-eye look isn’t my most flattering look, so I won’t be wearing those every day, but maybe every so often won’t hurt me, right? Actually, in high school I thought sun glasses in general looked so weird on me I never wore them, ever. So who knows? Maybe cat-eyes will be my go-to in 2015? Things could get crazy!
5. Be a woman of many hats.
As with sunglasses, I always thought hats looked ridiculous on me… and I’m not wrong, I have a pea-sized head, so the “one size fits most” hats do look completely wrong on my head. BUT, I will take the time to try on different hats and find ones that do fit my head because I actually really love a good hat and my resolution for 2015 is to wear many hats, every season! Big floppy hats in the summer, wide brimmed in the fall, fedoras to the beach, beanies in the winter, I’m going to wear a hat whenever I feel like it because they really can complete any look and pull some looks together in seconds.
6. Organize my closet
I hate my closet and because I hate my closet I actually have to force myself to put my clothes away. It’s an unorganized mess and I feel like it makes my life feel messy. In 2015 I am going to pull everything out of my closet and organize it, and KEEP IT THAT WAY. It will literally make everything more harmonious and I’ll be able to keep better track of what I own so I don’t make silly shopping mistakes so often. I have about 8 pairs of black leggings and 6 loose white t-shirts… why you ask? Because more often than not I can’t find something in my room or closet, assume I lost it, and buy a new one, only to find it rolled up into a ball in the back of my closet 6 weeks later. Organize your closet and your life will organize itself in the process. Well maybe not that extreme, but you know what I mean.
7. Editing my closet
In the process of organizing my closet I’m going to go through my clothes and get rid of the things I haven’t worn in 2014. I am a hoarder, especially of clothes. I have this, “well you never know if it’ll come back into style,” mentality, in which case I never get rid of anything! I seriously have things I’ve held onto since high school. Needless to say, I don’t look like I did in high school, and even if I did, should a worn in t-shirt that now fits like a crop top be worn on the regular? Probably not… maybe this is an item best moved to the “pajama” drawer. Go through your clothes and be realistic with your expectations. If you don’t see yourself wearing it this upcoming weekend, and if you haven’t worn it since your club hopping days in college, it’s probably time to let it go.
8. Wear more color.
I have my own personal style blog, which is pretty cool because I get to kind of look back in time at how my style is evolving and changing. But you know one thing that has not changed? I do not wear enough color. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind that my wardrobe pretty much consists of nothing but blacks and whites, but I don’t even mind color. SO, I’m going to make it a point to start shopping for things that are brighter and bolder. There is nothing wrong with color and I should not be afraid to wear it, and neither should you!
9. Don’t be afraid to mix it up
I am in love with the whole mixed print trend, but it scares the hell out of me. I love the way other people can wear a polka dot shirt with a leopard print belt and look chic. Me, on the other hand? I look like a tween on the Disney channel that wears every item of clothing in their closet at once. This year, I vow to at least try to wear mixed prints, even if it’s only a plaid shirt with a statement clutch or shoes. It’s doable for everyone else, why not me, right?
10. Don’t be afraid of the Canadian Tuxedo.
Same as the mixed prints, this is something that everyone else I see wearing it looks amazing but every time I try I just feel like I look silly. I know the secret is miss-matched hues and fit, so I’m going to try this, seriously, at least once. If you’re going to try to tackle this trend for the new year as well, one pro tip is to make sure your chambray top and denim bottoms are different hues. Go for a light wash top and dark wash bottoms, or vice versa, to add a little contrast to the look.
So! There are my personal style resolutions for the year to come, I’m sure I could go on and on and on with the list but I’ll just stop now to save my sanity. Follow along with me at TheRachelRoss.com to see if I actually keep up with any of these! I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year, thanks for being loyal readers at Mod City Mag!
