New Year, New Closet

How to clean out your closetIt’s 2014 and that means you officially have a clean slate, if you want one! The beginning of the year is always a great time to reevaluate your wardrobe. Time to sift through your closets, drawer, and jewelry boxes and make the most of what you already own. We’ve put together a few useful tips to help you maximize your wardrobe.

1.    Take Inventory
It’s time consuming, but 100% necessary. Make a habit of going through every single article of clothing you own. Two things will happen from this: 1. You’ll realize you’re hoarding things you’ve owned but haven’t worn or fit into since high school. 2. You’ll rediscover lost gems you forgot you owned and loved. While you do this, make different piles; items you’re without a doubt keeping, items you’re unsure of, items you’re tossing.

2.    Make Room
After you’ve gone through all of your clothes, the easiest pile to put away first is the keep pile. Organize it by color, season, type, and put it away accordingly. Next, tackle you’re maybe pile. My tip for making up your mind on these garments is to try every single item on again. You’ll either remember why you loved it and bought it in the first place, or remember why you haven’t worn it in three years. A lot of items may not fit the same anymore, which is a good sign it’s time to let them go, and maybe some pieces may have gone out of style. You can guiltlessly put these garments in the toss pile. Pack it all up into a bag and head on out to your local thrift and consignment shop or donation bin and get it off your hands!

3.    Replenish
This is my favorite part. Once you’ve cleaned out your closet you can now evaluate which pieces you got rid of that need updating. There are a few things every stylish woman needs in her closet:

Skinny jeans that makes every single inch of your butt, legs and thighs look killer. Splurge on a pair that is comfortable and looks killer on, and won’t go out of style. This is an article of clothing you’ll never have to replace if you shop smart!
A button down blouse. This, in my personal opinion, doesn’t necessarily have to be white. That’s pretty old fashioned. Go for a color that you wear often, that looks great on you. Maybe it’s black, or red, or a big color trend this season, gray.
The ultimate black pump. This doesn’t mean you have to spend three paychecks either, killer shoes can be cheap and comfortable and stylish! Do some shopping around, find the perfect pair for you, but do find a pair of black pumps.
A Little (insert color here) dress. Much like the white blouse, this dress doesn’t have to be black. While they will never go out of style, a little red or blue or white dress can look just as amazing and be just as versatile.
Chic flats. I cannot stress this one enough, especially if you are a commuter! I know we always strive to be stylish at all times, but not at the expense of our feet! There are so many fabulous options here, there is no reason why you can’t own a pair.
Boots. Whether they’re riding boots, over the knee boots, ankle boots, or motorcycle boots, you better own a pair! They are a great alternative to heels or flats as they can dress any look up or down.
An amazing winter coat. I don’t want to limit this to just trenches. While I think it’s a great coat to have in your collection, any coat can be a staple as long as you find one that fits you like a glove. Long, belted pea coats can be just as stylish and versatile as the coveted Burberry trench.
Leather moto jacket. Everyone should own one of these, regardless of your style. These jackets have become so versatile lately, they can be worn as is with a rocker chic look or thrown over a sweet sundress to add some edge. Bottom line, go get one if you don’t have it already!

We hope these tips help you de-clutter your closet this year! What else do you have on your wardrobe staple or style resolution lists? We’d love to know! Tweet us your resolutions at @The_RachelRoss!
