Whether you’re a runner, a cycler, a CrossFitter, a yogi, or participate in any other activities, you probably know how hard it is to find the perfect sports bra. What some lack in style they have in support, and vice versa. Most women agree that the perfect sports bra needs to be somewhat comfortable, fit well, be supportive, and be stylish. I’ve surveyed a few of my favorite female athletes and here are their tips when shopping for a great sports bra.
Activity matters. To get a bra that will work best, shop by activity. For running, HIIT training (like CrossFit or boot camp classes), and dance/aerobics like Zumba, look for a sports bra with firm support. You want these to feel compressive, but not so tight that you can’t move. For yoga, pilates, hiking or other low-impact exercises, you’re looking for a bra that is supportive, yet flexible enough for you to move easily in.
Know your body (and know that most stores don’t!). Try on at least two sizes of every type and manufacturer. You may be a size small at GAP, but likely a 6 or 8 at Lululemon, because of the way they size and construct their bras. Most fuller-chested women tend to prefer one thicker strap, while ladies with A or B cups can wear bras with multiple thin straps. Likewise, the style (compression versus encapsulation) matters based on your cup size. Quick tip: Compression for C and below, Encapsulation for full C’s and above.
Find a band that fits snugly around your rib cage. This part, and not the straps, is the foundation of the fit. You don’t want it so tight that it digs into your flesh and leaves a mark, but it cannot ride up when you move. To test, lift your arms up. If the band moves up, get a smaller size. If you feel a “pinch” underneath your skin, so a size up. If you’re between sizes, try a different style. Don’t sacrifice on this, or you’ll find yourself adjusting your band every few reps or poses…and that’s not a good look for anyone.
Above all, feel comfortable. Use your common sense and don’t buy any bras that you don’t love. If you do, you’ll inevitably end up burying it in the back of your drawer and continue to wear your favorites until they no longer get the job done. Don’t waste your money on a bra you don’t really like, either style or fit-wise.
