It’s that time of the year again! Back to school time! (Insert excited squeal here) While I’ve been out of school for a few years now, and my children are still a few years away from starting, there is a certain excitement that comes with the thought of going back to school, even if you aren’t. Back to school style and shopping is a ‘do’ for anyone, if you ask me. We could use any excuse to update our wardrobe! However, if you are one of the lucky ones, you’ll want to make sure your closet is stocked with a few essentials before strutting your stuff through campus.
First of all, the 90’s are back, and in a big way! For some of us that means getting to re-do our awkward years and getting it right this time (hallelujah). Stores are grabbing inspiration from 90’s icons like Cher, a la Clueless, or Gwen Stefani, a la No Doubt. So let’s start there.
Plaid
Plaid has always been my go-to print for fall. I have a closet FULL of flannels, but that’s not the only way you can wear them. Mix it up with a plaid schoolgirl skirt, or throw a plaid bun wrap in your hair. The possibilities are endless with this print… it’s literally everywhere!
Grunge
Grunge is back, but with a clean, polished twist. It’s not so much about looking like a Seattle grunge groupie from the 90’s, but like your feminine side is borrowing some of their clothes. Bowler hats, flannel shirt-dresses, skater skirts, it’s all coming back. Look for key pieces mixed with feminine prints. Pair your leather skirt with a floral sweatshirt, or flannel dress with a pair of Doc Martins.
Statement Prints
Prints are always having a moment, but this past year we’ve seen just about all of them, from galaxy to foods. This fall is no different. Grab yourself a pair of fun leggings adorned with the craziest print you can find. Pair it with a long sweatshirt and high top Chuck Taylors. A vintage dress covered in eyeglasses, lips, type writers? Totally on trend this year. Not exactly into the whole statement print thing? That’s okay. Start small with accessories! Find a necklace or even phone cover that packs a punch.
Sporty
The varsity jacket is no longer just for the jocks and what better place to rock this trend than at school? Add an updated twist to this classic look by opting for a varsity jacket with statement sleeves, either metallic or pastel (both huge trends this fall). We’ve also been seeing a lot of brands notorious for their workout gear branching out into the street wear fashion as well. Everyone from Lulu Lemon to Rebok has been creating pieces that you can wear in and out of the gym and still look high fashion.
Backpacks
Isn’t it nice to know that these aren’t just for school anymore? Backpacks made a huge comeback this year. They are perfect for people on the go whether you’re heading to class or running to catch the train. While Jansport has upped their game to keep up with the competition, there are a ton of fun alternatives that aren’t exactly super “first day of school looking.” Leather backpacks made a sophisticated statement, while bags covered in prints like polkadots or geometric shapes scream fun! Whatever you’re into, there is definitely a great back to school backpack for you!
Are you excited for back to school style after reading this? Because I so am! Excuse me while I head off to the mall for a cute new backpack!
